Thailand&#8217;s economy is heavily reliant on exports. in 2024, the country\u2019s goods exports reached approximately <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">USD 300.5 billion<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, marking a growth of about <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/thailand.prd.go.th\/en\/content\/category\/detail\/id\/52\/iid\/359226\">5.4%<\/a> <\/span>from the previous year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite occasional political change and its status as a constitutional monarchy, business operations and export activity in Thailand proceed with relative stability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thailand\u2019s population is estimated at around <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cia.gov\/the-world-factbook\/countries\/thailand\/?utm_source=inspection.goodada.com\"><strong>69.8 million<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (2023 estimate). <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The demographic profile is shifting: the country has a high median age and a growing proportion of older citizens, reflecting the challenges of an ageing population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Economically, Thailand recorded growth of about <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/thailand\/overview?utm_source=inspection.goodada.com\"><strong>2.5% in 2024<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, aided by solid ehttps:\/\/www.cia.gov\/the-world-factbook\/countries\/thailand\/xport performance and government stimulus. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a strategic location perspective, Thailand benefits from good infrastructure, a growing affluent middle class, and the ability to reach <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a large part<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of the world within a few hours\u2019 flight \u2014 factors that make it an attractive proposition for international business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Thailand Business Culture<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"261\" data-end=\"528\">English is commonly used in larger Thai companies, especially those with international links. However, among small and medium-sized enterprises, English proficiency can be limited, so it\u2019s often helpful to keep communication simple and confirm key details in writing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"799\">As in many Asian markets, personal relationships matter greatly in Thailand. Before discussing contracts or pricing, Thai partners will usually take time to get to know you and assess whether a long-term relationship is possible. Patience and consistency go a long way.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"877\">When doing business in Thailand, keep the following cultural points in mind:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"1703\">\n<li data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"1004\">\n<p data-start=\"881\" data-end=\"1004\">Avoid pointing directly at someone with your finger or snapping your fingers to get attention. Decisions often flow from senior figures, so address them appropriately.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1703\">\n<p data-start=\"1575\" data-end=\"1703\">Use <strong data-start=\"1579\" data-end=\"1589\">\u201cKhun\u201d<\/strong> (the Thai equivalent of Mr.\/Mrs.\/Ms..) followed by the person\u2019s first name when addressing your Thai counterparts.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Setting up in Thailand<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are a few practical ways to break into the Thai market. Some firms start by appointing a local agent or distributor. Others prefer to ship directly from abroad, partner with a franchise operator, or set up a joint venture. Larger companies sometimes go a step further and open a representative office or a small regional base to manage the market.<\/p>\n<p>Thai buyers place a lot of value on good technical support. Price matters, of course, but people want to know that someone is available locally when something goes wrong. Having even a small presence on the ground often gives foreign companies far more credibility.<\/p>\n<p>Ownership rules can affect how you set up. In many sectors, foreign firms can only hold up to 49% of a company, with the rest staying in Thai hands. That said, the rules are not the same across the board. Some industries can apply for higher foreign ownership, especially if the project qualifies for incentives from the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boi.go.th\/index.php?page=index&amp;language=en?utm_source=inspection.goodada.com\">Thai Board of Investment<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve decided how you plan to enter the market, take your time and get proper legal and commercial advice. Thailand is a friendly place to do business, but the paperwork and local regulations can be tricky if you\u2019re new to them.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Banking and Finance<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Thailand\u2019s currency is the Thai Baht (\u0e3f or THB), which is widely available and easy to exchange across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The country has a well-established banking system. At present, there are 14 Thai commercial banks operating nationwide, along with 11 branches of foreign banks that handle international business and trade-related services.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand does have foreign exchange controls, but most travellers and business visitors rarely run into issues. Non-residents can bring in as much foreign currency as they wish, and they can take the same amount back out when they leave. The rules are stricter for Thai Baht: visitors cannot take more than 50,000 Baht out of the country, unless they are travelling to one of Thailand\u2019s neighbouring countries \u2014 Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, or Vietnam \u2014 where the limit increases to 500,000 Baht. There are no limits on how much Thai Baht can be brought into Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Thailand &#8211; Tariffs and Non-Tariff Barriers<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Tariff<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thailand is part of the ASEAN community, so it follows the regional tariff-reduction arrangements that apply to trade between ASEAN member countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Most goods entering Thailand <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">face<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> two main charges: <\/span>import duty and VAT<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Importers calculate import duty by applying the duty rate to the CIF value of the goods. They then add that duty amount to the CIF value and use the total to calculate VAT. If excise tax applies, they must add it before calculating VAT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Goods that are brought into Thailand for re-export are usually exempt from both duty and VAT, provided the correct procedures are followed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Up-to-date details on excise tax can be found on the Ministry of Finance\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/interweb.excise.go.th\/home.php?lang=en\">Excise Department website<\/a><\/span><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, while<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> customs duties and trade statistics are available through the Thai Customs Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Non-tariff barriers<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Most goods can move freely into Thailand once the correct import duties are paid. However, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a number of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> items are either restricted or completely banned, and it\u2019s <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">important<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to be aware of these before shipping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Prohibited goods<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> are items that cannot be imported into or exported from Thailand under any circumstances. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Obscene or indecent publications or images<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pornographic material<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Products displaying the Thai national flag in an improper way<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Narcotics such as heroin, cocaine, opium, and similar substances<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Counterfeit banknotes, bonds, or coins<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fake government seals or royal seals<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Goods that infringe intellectual property rights, such as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> pirated CDs, DVDs, or software<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Counterfeit branded products<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Restricted goods<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> can be imported, but only with the correct licence or approval from the relevant Thai authority. Some examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Medicines, food products, and supplements \u2014 require approval from <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Food and Drug Administration under the Ministry of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Public Health<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Antiques and works of art \u2014 need permission from the Fine Arts Department, even if the items are unregistered<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Weapons, ammunition, explosives, fireworks, and both <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">real<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and replica firearms \u2014 require permits from the Ministry of Interior; some electrical weapons must also be declared<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cosmetics covered under the Cosmetic Act \u2014 importers must provide details of their business location, storage location, product type, and the main ingredients<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Wildlife, plants, fish, and related species \u2014 require approval from the Department of National Parks, the Department of Agriculture, or the Department of Fisheries, depending on the item<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If you need guidance on whether a particular product can be imported into Thailand, you should consult the relevant Thai government agency or a specialist customs advisor before shipping.
