The recent election of Donald Trump may have finally put the nail into the coffin of the current trade negotiations between the USA & the EU.

However there were massive signals from the European side of difficulties which required drastic amendments which would all but leave the EU-US trade deal dead.

Indeed some EU ministers were suggesting that what was required was for TTIP, which had such negative connotations in the eyes of the public, to be scrapped and a new round of trade talks to be commenced under a different name.

The main reasons why Europeans are calling to end talks on TTIP are:
• The need to be more transparent and have clearer objectives which will win public support for the trade agreements and overcome the anti-globalization public mood.
• Demands that the Americans bring a different attitude to the talks and drop their resistance to a provision requiring American states and cities to allow competitive bidding by European suppliers government contracts.
• Brexit will need to be resolved by Europe prior to finalising any trade negotiations with the Americans.
• European governments need to retain their power enact legislation in the public interest and not be liable to sued by companies whose business will be harmed by any new regulations.
• Any trade agreement will need to actively seen to benefit small & medium sized businesses and not just major corporations.
• The US should recognize regional food names such as Feta, Champagne or Parma ham.
